Former Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali wrote the film, Submission: Part 1, that led a Muslim extremist to shoot its producer, Theo van Gogh. Ali was born in Somalia and claimed refugee status in Holland in the early 1990s. Some see her as a heroine of free speech, others condemn her. Ali’s new book, The Infidel, explores her troubled childhood.

You were brought up a devout Muslim. What made you turn against the religion?

I knew no better than to follow the path my parents had laid out for me. I didn’t question it seriously until after 9/11. Bin Laden defined the world into Muslims and non-Muslims, and these had to either be converted or killed. I asked myself where I stood after I saw the pictures of people jumping out of the World Trade Center. As a Muslim I had to ask if I agreed with that. I was saddened to see Bin Laden’s citations were from the Koran and were consistent with the Islam I grew up with. It is just that we were passive until then. Now we had to take sides. I had completed a political science degree and could no longer use ignorance as an excuse. I had to make my own path.

Shiva Nazar Ahari (born 1984) (Persian: شیوا نظر آهاری) is a notable Iranian human rights defender and a member of the Committee of Human Rights Reporters. She has been arrested several times by the Islamic regime of Iran for defending human rights. The last time was 14 June 2009 and she was held in Evin prison until September 23, 2009 when she was released on an equivalent of a $200,000 bail. ^[1]. She was in solitary confinement for 33 days.^[2][3] On December 21, 2009 she was arrested once again while traveling to the funeral of Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri along with several other activists.^[4]

Policía Federal mexicana ha anunciado hoy la expulsión de 3.200 de sus agentes (aproximadamente un 10% del cuerpo), sospechosos de distintos delitos o de violación del reglamento. Dentro del mismo proceso de “revisión y depuración” se han abierto expedientes disciplinarios a otros 1.020 efectivos “por incumplimiento de los requisitos de permanencia, específicamente por no haber cumplido los exámenes de control de confianza”, según ha explicado Facundo Rosas, su responsable.
